     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico— The wait for the Round 2 of the 2026 SCORE World Desert Championship—the BFGoodrich Tires 58th SCORE Baja 500—is nearly over in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. The municipality will welcome adventurers from across the globe from June 3-7, 2026.

     Over nearly six decades, off-road legends such as Ivan ‘Ironman’ Stewart, Rod Hall, Jim O’Neal, Larry ‘Mr. Baja’ Roeseler, Richard Jackson, Francisco Septien, Jeff Kaplan, Steve Hengeveld, and Shane Esposito have celebrated numerous victories at the SCORE Baja 500, particularly within the Ensenada municipality.

      To everything there is a beginning and the launch of SCORE International’s remarkable history in Mexico came on July 26, 1974 when what has become the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization was asked to take over and officially produced its first SCORE Baja race – the SCORE Baja Internacional in Ensenada, Baja California.
     As SCORE continues its sixth decade this year, the Baja 500 started in 1969 by the NORRA organization but because of legal challenges regarding the use of the name after NORRA was removed as the official U.S. desert racing promoter in Mexico by the government at the end of 1972, SCORE had to use the name SCORE Baja Internacional for nearly two decades.

      Eventually then-SCORE owner Sal Fish was able to negotiate the use of the original name of the race and it became duly registered as the SCORE Baja 500. In 1973, the Baja 500 was organized and produced by a local tourism group called the Baja Sports Committee.

      On only one occasion has the SCORE Baja 500 been held outside of Mexico, when the event moved in 1984 to the deserts of Barstow, California. However, Ensenada has hosted the start of the legendary off-road race 54 times, including three starts in Ojos Negros, which is part of the Ensenada municipality, as well as two occasions when the race began in the municipality of San Felipe, Baja California.

A NEW START
     With tremendous assistance from Nico Saad, long-time Ensenada tourism advocate and owner of the legendary San Nicolas Hotel & Casino in Ensenada, Mickey Thompson and his fledgling SCORE International organization were invited by the Mexican government to take over the Baja 500 starting in 1974 and become the exclusive U.S. promoter for Baja California.
     Thus came the birth of the SCORE Baja Internacional (legal issues precluded SCORE from gaining the rights to use the name Baja 500 until 1991). The first SCORE Baja Internacional (produced by Mickey Thompson and Sal Fish) was held on July 26, 1974 in Ensenada with 279 official starters and 173 official finishers.   But fans, media and racers alike have always called it the Baja 500.
     Noted Hollywood stunt driver and Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee Bobby Ferro won the overall 4-wheel vehicle title for the third of four times in his career in 1974, this time in a VW-Sandmaster open-wheel desert race car. The fastest overall motorcycle in this 1974 race was the Husqvarna with Mitch Mayes and A.C. Bakken sharing the riding duties.

58 YEARS OF EPIC ADVENTURES
     The BFGoodrich Tires 58th SCORE Baja 500 will kick off with pre-running on Saturday, May 23, followed by Method Race Wheels Qualifying on Thursday, June 4, the colorful contingency row and tech inspection on Friday, June 5, the green flag on Saturday, June 6, and the awards ceremony on Sunday, June 7.

     Rat Sult, in his 11th season as part of the SCORE International staff, will once again bring his signature style to the contingency row, start, and finish line. Known as ‘The Voice of SCORE,’ Sult will be joined on the microphone by Kevin Johnson, with Brian Eaton serving as assistant to both.

SEPTIEN, THE AZTEC KING OF THE BAJA 500
      With 10 victories, Francisco ‘Pancho Pistolas’ Septien, 50, Ensenada, Mexico, is the Mexican racer with the most wins in the history of the SCORE Baja 500, all earned on a motorcycle and including a streak of three consecutive victories in the prestigious SCORE race.

      Septien won all four rounds of the 2025 SCORE World Desert Championship in the Pro Moto 40 class as part of the team alongside Shane Esposito, 51, Canyon Lake, Calif., Jason Miller, 53, Shiner, Texas, Jim O’Neal, 79, Camarillo, Calif., and Rene Magana, 44, San Ysidro, Calif. He also claimed victory at the King Shocks 39th SCORE San Felipe 250 in March.

      Francisco Septien earned his first Baja 500 win in 2010, followed by victories in the 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024, and 2025 editions. Another Ensenada-born racer, Marcos Nunez of Kiosko Racing, ranks second in this statistic with nine victories, all achieved alongside Norberto ‘Popeye’ Rivera, some in Class 11 and others in Class 5-1600.

     ENSENADA, Baja California, México– La espera para la celebración de la segunda fecha del Campeonato Mundial del Desierto 2026 de SCORE International, la edición 58 de la BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500, está cerca de terminar en Ensenada, Baja California, México, municipio que recibirá a los aventureros de diferentes continentes del 3 al 7 de Junio de 2026.

     A lo largo de casi 6 décadas, leyendas del Off-Road como Iván “Hombre de Acero” Stewart, Rod Hall, Jim O´Neal, Larry “Mr. Baja” Roeseler, Richard Jackson, Francisco Septién, Jeff Kaplan, Steve Hengeveld y Shane Esposito, han celebrado muchos triunfos en la SCORE Baja 500, en especial, dentro del municipio de Ensenada.

     Todo tiene un principio, y el lanzamiento de la notable historia de SCORE International en México ocurrió el 26 de Julio de 1974, cuando la principal organización de carreras fuera de camino del mundo fue invitada a hacerse cargo y producir oficialmente su primera carrera de SCORE Baja: la SCORE Baja Internacional en Ensenada, Baja California.
    A medida que SCORE continúa hacia su sexta década de vida, la Baja 500, que comenzó en 1969 bajo la guía de NORRA, organización que ya no pudo realizar la carrera al no darse un acuerdo con el gobierno de Baja California a finales de 1972, entrando SCORE International para encargarse de la logística de la carrera.

    Eventualmente, el entonces propietario de SCORE, Sal Fish, pudo negociar el uso del nombre original de la carrera, y, este fue debidamente registrado como la SCORE Baja 500. En 1973, la Baja 500 fue organizada y producida por un grupo local de turismo llamado el Comité de Deportes de Baja.

     Solo en una ocasión, la SCORE Baja 500 no se ha realizado en México, al mudarse la sede en 1984 a los desiertos de Barstow, California, pero Ensenada ha acaparado 54 veces la sede de arranque de la legendaria carrera fuera de camino, incluidos 3 arranques en Ojos Negros, que forma parte del municipio de Ensenada, más 2 veces que la carrera arrancó en el municipio de San Felipe, Baja California.

UN NUEVO COMIENZO
    Con la gran ayuda de Nico Saad, un defensor de largo tiempo del turismo en Ensenada y propietario del legendario San Nicolás Hotel & Casino en Ensenada, Mickey Thompson y su incipiente organización SCORE International fueron invitados por el gobierno mexicano para hacerse cargo de la Baja 500 a partir de 1974 y convertirse en el promotor exclusivo de Estados Unios para Baja California.
    Así nació la SCORE Baja Internacional (cuestiones legales impidieron que SCORE obtuviera los derechos para usar el nombre Baja 500 hasta 1991). La primera SCORE Baja Internacional (producida por Mickey Thompson y Sal Fish) se celebró el 26 de Julio de 1974 en Ensenada, contando con 279 equipos participantes oficiales y 173 equipos que cruzaron la meta en esa ocasión. Pero los aficionados, medios de comunicación y corredores siempre la han llamado la Baja 500.
    El famoso conductor de acrobacias de Hollywood y miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road, Bobby Ferro, ganó el título overall de vehículos de 4 ruedas por tercera vez en su carrera en 1974, esa vez en un buggy Sandmaster con motor Volkswagen. La motocicleta más rápida en la carrera, fue la Husqvarna tripulada por Mitch Mayes y A.C. Bakken, quienes dividieron la odisea en esa ocasión.

LA EDICIÓN 58

      La edición 58 de la BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 contará con su inicio de recorridos el Sábado 23 de Mayo de 2026, además de la Calificación Method Race Wheels el Jueves 4 de Junio de 2026, la colorida revisión mecánica el Viernes 5 de Junio de 2026, el banderazo de salida el Sábado 6 de Junio de 2026, y la ceremonia de premiación el Domingo 7 de Junio de 2026.

      Rat Sult, en su temporada número 11 como parte del staff de SCORE International, volverá a ponerle su toque característico en la rampa de revisión mecánica, salida y meta, quien es conocido como “La Voz de SCORE”. Sult tendrá el apoyo en el micrófono de Kevin Johnson, además de tener como asistente de ambos a Brian Eaton.

SEPTIÉN, EL REY AZTECA DE LA BAJA 500

      Con 10 victorias, el ensenadense Francisco “Pancho Pistolas” Septién, quien cuenta con 50 años, es el mexicano con más triunfos en la historia de la SCORE Baja 500, todos a bordo de una motocicleta, y con una racha de 3 victorias en fila dentro de la prestigiada carrera de SCORE International.

       Septién ganó las 4 fechas del Campeonato Mundial del Desierto 2025 de SCORE International en la clase Pro Moto 40, como parte del equipo de Shane Esposito, de 51 años, y de 51, Canyon Lake, California, Jason Miller, de 53 años, y de Shiner, Texas, Jim O´Neal, de 79 años, y de Camarillo, California, y René Magaña, de 44 años, y de San Ysidro, California, además de que también ganó la edición 39 de la King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 en Marzo.

         Francisco Septién logró su primer triunfo en la historia de la Baja 500 en 2010, y luego le siguieron éxitos en las ediciones de 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023, 2024 y 2025. Otro corredor nativo de Ensenada, Marcos Núñez del equipo Kiosko Racing, es segundo en esta estadística con 9 victorias, todas conseguidas al lado de Norberto “Popeye” Rivera, algunos de esos éxitos fueron en la Clase 11, y otros en la Clase 5-1600.
